Testing Cp of complex samples and batteries
The Specific Heat Capacity Measurement Module enables direct testing of the Specific Heat Capacity of any sample type (bulk, granule, powder, paste, gel, liquid, etc.) or shape or any system component (e.g., button, cylindrical, prismatic, pouch-cell battery) using our dedicated Hot Cell® sensors. The Module is designed for single sample or component testing.
Like all other measurement modules of the Hot Disk® instruments, the Hot Cell® testing procedure is gentle and non-destructive. The sample or component is tested with our Hot Cell® sensors, where the sample or component is placed inside the metal container of the Hot Cell® sensor. The metal container is thermally insulated (generally with foam insulation) and carefully heated a few degrees with a well-defined heating power. Precise monitoring of its temperature increase allows very accurate determination of the Specific Heat Capacity of the material or component.
It should be noted that it is possible to apply the Specific Heat Capacity Measurement Module using our Hot Disk® sensors instead of our Hot Cell® sensors in some situations. This requires bulk samples with a flat surface and high thermal conductivity (>5 W/mK). However, we recommend using our Hot Cell® sensors even in such scenarios to maximize measurement accuracy.
We invented this versatile Specific Heat Capacity measurement technique, and the theory behind it is presented in our 19951 paper published in Thermal Conductivity.
