This type of testing shows the same excellent reproducibility as a standard test and makes it possible to perform quick QC measurements or rapid comparative studies. The admitted drawback of single-sided testing is a slightly lower accuracy in the results, which ensues from the necessarily asymmetric heat flow around the sensor. As a result of this, and the use of an insulating sample support, the best results are acquired for high-conducting samples while low-conducting samples (e.g. many polymers) only yield thermal effusivity. Single-sided testing requires no additional equipment, only the use of any insulating material to support the sensor. This is supplied with all Hot Disk instruments, and can be complimented by an insulating material of your preference.
