The Hot Disk sensor, at its core, is an insulated nickel double spiral, which is utilized for both transient heating and precise temperature reading. The insulation material makes the sensor mechanically stable and durable, and the use of nickel metal in the spiral makes the thermal conductivity measurements accurate.

Kapton Sensors

The Kapton-insulated sensors are the most versatile in the Hot Disk sensor portfolio. They have a long lifetime, if handled with care, even when employed at temperatures as high as 300 °C in air atmosphere.

Teflon Sensors

Teflon-insulated sensors are designed for use in extreme conditions, such as acidic or corroding environments, or with sticky and reactivate samples. These sensors otherwise have features similar to the Kapton sensors.

Mica Sensors

The mica-insulated sensors are designed for measurements at elevated temperatures, typically above 300 °C and up to a maximum of 800 °C. They are commonly more perishable at higher temperatures, but easily replaced.

Our Apps

Hot Disk has inhouse software development where the desktop software is continuously improved and evolved. As an extension we also have developed a companion app for your smartphone, packed with useful information and tools

Hot Disk Desktop App

The desktop software controls the Hot Disk instruments. It’s a modular application where new measurement modules can be added seamlessly. We continuously develop and evolve this appreciated tool to add new functionality and improve the user experience. We offer all our clients free updates, as long as the hard ware is compatible.

The current software version is 7.4.15. If you are using an older version, please feel free to request an update from our software support at Make sure to include your affiliation and the serial number of your instrument (found in the test protocol and on the backside of the instrument) in your request.

Thermal Toolbox Mobile App

This is the perfect companion app for any Hot Disk user. It contains an extensive database of thermal transport properties of over 1000 materials, a paper database citing more than 1000 peer-reviewed scientific articles utilizing the Hot Disk technique, a tool for converting the units of relevant properties between different systems, eg. Metric to imperial. Finally, it provides easy access to even more resources online.

Training Sessions

Hot Disk offers regular in-depth or customized Training Sessions at the Gothenburg head office for its clients. The sessions are tailored to the specific needs and demands of the participants at each occasion. These courses are given by the expert staff at Hot Disk, all PhDs in the fields of material science or physics.

We recommend that students (i.e. M.Sc. and Ph.D. candidates) successfully participating in one of our training sessions be awarded one (1) ECTS point.

Due to the Covid-19 Situation

In view of the current and widespread travel restrictions due to the Covid pandemic, we have decided to postpone our regular on-site training sessions at our Hot Disk headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden, indefinitely until further notice.

However, to meet the demands of our valued clients, we are now offering online seminars and exclusive (individual or group) training courses by means of Zoom, Teams and Webex streaming platforms during the year 2021.
